It’s easy to be lulled into thinking there is a perfect process or checklist that will keep our data safe. This can lead to complacency — the opposite of security, especially in a cyber environment where hacking techniques can be obscured, addresses and traffic can be spoofed, credentials can be harvested and more. This presentation discusses a more holistic approach to cybersecurity based on identifying anomalies from unmaskable data sources and using them to conduct further investigation.

Edward Rhyne, M.B.A., M.S., is a senior technical adviser for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESER). He currently leads the threat mitigation portfolio, which includes programs focused on the energy sector. Previously, Rhyne was a senior technical adviser in the Cybersecurity Division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) Science and Technology Directorate. As a DHS assignment in the United Kingdom’s Home Office, he piloted science and technology efforts for the UK’s Home Office Innovative Science and Technology in Counter Terrorism (INSTINCT) program.
